This week, the Tel Aviv City Council voted to allow buses to run on Saturdays (see Haaretz article here). Buses are not allowed to operate on Saturdays in Israel because it is the Shabbat, or day of rest. Before it can offer transit 7-days a week, the City must seek approval for the plan from the federal Ministry of Transportation. On the surface, this looks like a victory for transit users, but it actually speaks to the broader debates going on in Israel right now about the connection between church and state (e.g. recent Supreme Court decision).
